This Is Why Your Photos Feel Awkward (And How to Fix It)
Tuesday, February 17, 2026 | By: Erin Hurst Photography
If you’ve ever looked at photos of yourself and thought,
“Why do I look stiff?”
“Why are my arms doing… that?”
“Why doesn’t this feel like me?”
First of all: you’re not alone. Second of all:
✨ You are not awkward. The experience was. ✨
Awkward photos don’t come from your face, your body, or your personality. They come from an experience that didn’t make you feel comfortable, relaxed, or supported. And once that changes, everything else becomes so much more natural.
Standing Still Is a Trap (Sorry, But It Is)
If your session involved a lot of “stand here and smile,” I already know why it felt weird.
Standing still makes people tense. Like… shoulders up, jaw clenched, hands suddenly forgetting how to exist tense.
Movement is where it’s at, baby!
Walking, shifting your weight, laughing mid-sentence, turning your head toward someone you love. Those little moments help your body relax and your personality come through.
Silence Is Awkward. Talking Is Not.
Another big reason photos feel off? Too much quiet.
If your photographer goes silent and you’re left alone with your thoughts, your brain is left to spiral.
Am I doing this right?
Do I look okay?
Why did my feet turn into boats??
Conversation changes everything. Laughing, chatting, and just being human helps you loosen up.
We Don’t Just Take Photos. We Become Friends.
This is honestly my favorite part.
The best sessions don’t feel like a photoshoot. They feel like hanging out with a new friend who happens to have a camera.
The pressure disappears because it stops feeling like you’re “on display” and starts feeling like you’re just being yourself.
By the time we’re really rolling, it feels effortless. No forced smiles, no stiff energy. Just real, happy, comfortable moments.
Comfort Is the Real Glow-Up
Your comfort shows up in your photos more than any pose ever will.
When you feel tense, it shows. When you feel relaxed, supported, and confident, it really shows.
No edit can fake that. Comfort is the glow-up!
You Should Leave Thinking, “Wait… That Was Fun?!”
That’s the goal. Always.
A photo session should feel easy, supportive, and actually enjoyable. You should walk away feeling lighter, not counting down the minutes until it’s over.
If you’ve ever said, “I hate being in front of the camera,” chances are you don’t hate photos. You just haven’t had the right experience yet.
The Fix Is Way Easier Than You Think
You don’t need to change your body.
You don’t need to practice posing.
You don’t need to suddenly become “photogenic.”
What you need is a photographer who you can be yourself in front of. A session that feels relaxed, human, and fun.
Final Thought
If your past photos felt awkward, no need to blame yourself. It’s almost always an experience issue, not a you issue.
You deserve photos that look like you on a really good day.
And if you want someone who will feel like a stand-in bestie, make the whole thing easy, and ensure your photos actually feel like you… you know where to find me 😉
