If you’re new to West Virginia, you’ve probably already noticed that it doesn’t feel or look like everywhere else. Things move a little slower here. The views are more impressive than you’d expect. And somehow even a random back road can end up being the prettiest place you’ve ever stood.
One of the first questions I get from people who just moved here or are visiting for the first time is, “Where should we take photos?”
And honestly, there isn’t one perfect answer. It depends on what feels like you. But if you told me to choose a few places that really capture the feeling of West Virginia, here’s where I’d start.
This is usually one of my first suggestions, not because it’s trendy, but because it works for so many picture-worthy situations. It’s iconic!
The light out here is soft and open, the overlooks give you space to breathe, and people naturally relax when they’re surrounded by the mountains. You don’t have to be a serious hiker or outdoorsy person to enjoy the New River Gorge either. Some of my favorite spots are easy to get to but still feel quiet and cinematic.
It’s perfect for couples, engagements, families, or anyone who wants photos that feel natural and really show off The Mountain State.
Not every West Virginia session has to happen on a trail or overlook.
Downtown Charleston has this understated charm that photographs beautifully. Interesting architecture, small-business lined streets, structured yet quaint - it’s a great option if you want something relaxed but still polished.
Most of the time we just walk and talk while I shoot along the way. It ends up feeling less like a formal session and more like documenting a trip to get pizza at Pies & Pints or ice cream at Ellen’s. And there’s always The Capitol!
Not every West Virginia session has to feel outdoorsy or laid back. Sometimes it’s fun to lean into something a little more elevated, and The Greenbrier is always my go-to for that. Classic architecture, soft colors, and spaces that already feel styled without us having to try too hard. It’s a really good option if you want something timeless and polished but still relaxed.
Most of the time we just move through the property slowly and let the setting do its thing. The long walkways, quiet corners, and big open spaces make it easy to create moments that feel intentional without feeling stiff. It ends up feeling less like a formal resort shoot and more like stepping into a slightly dressed-up version of your everyday energy.
Some of my favorite locations don’t even have names.
West Virginia has so many beautiful, bright open spaces where the light settles in perfectly at the end of the day with lots of room to move around and feel comfortable.
These spots are great for families, senior graduates, or couples who want something simple and soft without a lot of distraction. Sometimes these spots are right off the side of the road. Don’t worry, I scope them out to ensure they’re safe!
What I’ve learned living and working in West Virginia is that so many locations aren’t just a backdrop, they’re special spots that help tell your story.
When you feel comfortable in the space around you, your photos will reflect that. My goal isn’t to fit you into a specific “mountain look.” It’s to find a place that matches your personality and let the session unfold naturally.
You don’t have to know all the hidden spots or show up with a full plan. That’s one of the many fun parts of my job.
When you share what you’re seeking, whether you’re drawn to mountain views, downtown streets, or something quiet and simple, we’ll figure it out together. The goal is always the same: photos that capture your special moments in some of the most special places.
