Read this before you book a photographer

Let’s talk about something that doesn’t get enough airtime when you’re scrolling Instagram at 10p.m. with 17 tabs open and a group chat blowing up your phone.
Booking a photographer is about way more than pretty pictures.
Yes, you want images you love. Of course! But the real magic happens long before the camera ever clicks. And if you don’t know what to look for, you can end up with photos that technically look nice, but don’t feel like you.
So before you book based on prices, trends, or who has the flashiest feed, here’s the inside scoop on what really matters.
How You Feel Matters More Than How You Look
If you feel awkward, rushed, confused, or unsure during your session, it will show. I don’t care how good the lighting is.
The best photos come from people who feel comfortable enough to laugh, move, take a breath, and be themselves. Your photographer should make you feel like you belong in front of the camera, not like you’re being graded on your posing skills.
If you’re constantly thinking, “What do I do with my hands?” or “Am I doing this wrong?” something is off.
You deserve to be guided, encouraged, and genuinely relaxed.
Experience Beats Price Every Time
I know price matters, I really do. But here’s the honest truth from someone who’s been behind the camera for a long time.
A cheaper photographer who leaves you guessing will cost you more in regret than an experienced photographer who knows how to lead you.
Experience means knowing how to:
-
Direct without being awkward or demanding
-
Adjust poses so they feel natural, not stiff
-
Keep things moving so it doesn’t feel uncomfortable or forced
-
Read the room when nerves pop up
-
Make the session fun instead of feeling like a chore
You’re not just paying for photos. You’re paying for experience, confidence, calm (yet light and fun!) energy, and someone who knows what they’re doing even when you don’t.
Communication Is Everything
If it’s hard to get answers before you book, it won’t magically get better later.
Your photographer should be clear, responsive, and genuinely interested in what you’re hoping to capture. You should know what to expect, how to prepare, and what the process looks like from start to finish.
You should never feel like you’re annoying them with questions. This is literally their job.
Good communication builds trust. And trust shows up beautifully in photos.
Trends Fade. Connection Doesn’t.
Trendy edits, viral poses, and Pinterest-perfect moments come and go. What lasts are images that show the real you.
When you look back at your photos, you won’t care if the edit matched a 2024 aesthetic. You’ll care if you recognize yourself in them.
The goal is not to look like everyone else on your feed. The goal is to look like you, on your best, most confident, happiest day!
You Should Feel Taken Care Of
This one matters more than people realize.
Your photographer should make you feel supported from inquiry to gallery delivery. That means checking in, offering guidance, and creating a situation where you don’t have to overthink every little thing.
You should walk away from your session thinking, “That was actually fun!” not “I’m glad that’s over.”
Final Thought Before You Book
If you take anything from this, let it be this:
Choose the photographer who makes you feel comfortable, confident, and cared for. The one who communicates clearly, guides you naturally, and lets you be yourself.
Because when you feel good, you look good. And trust me, you’re gorge!
And if you want someone who will hype you up, guide you through every step, and make sure you actually enjoy being in front of the camera… well, you know where to find me 😉
